Investing in Aerials at Home

There may be a soap box involved here, but as our time at home draws longer, I’ve been receiving an increase of inquiries into how to set up, purchase, do aerials, etc at home.

I am not a rigger, and yes, a professional, insured rigger and structural engineer are two very important components of this equation! A contractor may be able to assist rigging for a static load, but! we are talking about dynamic loads and safety factors. If you’re not using or working with this vocabulary, there’s your first red flag!

I do not condone rigging at home, especially in a tree! Especially, especially! if you are not actively taking classes with an insured instructor who can guide proper technique and form, which are essential in minimizing your risk off the ground and injuries in the long-term.
With THAT being said/typed, I also acknowledge people are going to do what they want, and our outlets to aerial studios are severely limited at this time. I do not want to shame or embarrass people who are pursuing setting up their own apparatuses at home. I would prefer to share correct information and guide against the misinformation that is equally and readily available.

So, the information I feel comfortable in sharing regards the vendors and resources I use.

  • Our fabrics and hardware for the studio are purchased through : https://aerialessentials.com/
They are a great resource, with reliably-rated hardware and informative tutorials on how to tie the fabrics, select the correct length, etc. There are other retailers online as well, but I would dissuade from purchasing through ebay or Amazon who may not provide correctly-rated hardware, even though it’s advertised as “aerial rigging.” You would be surprised the dynamic load even climbing creates on an apparatus! A beginner can add 60 lbs (give or take) of dynamic force pulling and twisting on a rigging point when first getting onto an apparatus. (If you really want the nitty-gritty: http://www.orionriggers.com/doc/documentazione/Measuring_forces_in_aerial_performances.pdf)

  • I also recommend AK Athletics for mats:  https://akathletics.com/
Please! Do NOT practice without a mat!

  • I will caution with online learning, too. There are a lot of great videos out there, but there are also some very unsafe practices with rigging and apparatuses I have stumbled across online. There is a lot of misinformation in how to tie knots, rig, etc, so I'm happy to help suss through videos or tutorials if you have a question about safety. Send me your videos!

If you are searching via YouTube, here are some online resources from trusted, insured professionals who teach in a methodical, systematic approach to keep bodies safe on and off the ground:

    Paper Doll Militia https://www.youtube.com/user/paperdollmilitia

    Rebekah Leach  https://www.youtube.com/user/A2JDancer
    Kerri Kresinski https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTyHMPRZlAQYDYBYLWJ1zVg

If you have a question about a resource or video, again, please send it my way & I will do my best to determine the reliability of the source!

  • I AM available as a resource! Tying your fabrics or learning the basics, I can guide you virtually. Not sure which way the swivel goes or how to open your carabiner? I can help.
I have been an insured aerial instructor for over five years; I have completed multiple teacher trainings; and I am also a NASM Certified Personal Trainer. I would love to work with you and help guide correct information, so you can have a safe and successful practice.

I'm truly at a loss of words with all of the constant updates inundating us these past weeks.
All I can say is, I am grateful for YOU and missing our students this week has been challenging! I'm excited to use Zoom as a platform to interact with everyone and keep us working together.

I wish everyone some moments of detachment to enjoy genuine time with family, neighbors, friends, or even alone.
Thank you for your support and being a part of our aerial community - you all contribute to keeping us a positive & motivating fitness environment, regardless of our format!

Continued Updates...

As of 3/16/2020: It is time for us to practice social distancing, if you’re not already doing so.
(As of 3/18/2020 12:00am: We are now under a Shelter in Place.)
The studio will be closed through the end of March, more realistically until further notice. I am posting most of our real-time updates on Instagram; please give us a follow if you haven't already!

I will be creating some exercises y’all can access online to keep us in aerial shape during our time away  (stay tuned for more details) We may be apart, but our splits, inversions, and grip strength will not suffer!

Sending so much love to our flyers & community at this time

If you have purchased classes, packages, or memberships, they will be on hold until we open again.

Asking for your Feedback

As I am quickly researching the best format(s) for offering classes online, I'd love to hear what format(s) work best for you!
Please fill out this quick survey so I can best provide for my student base.
My goal is to provide classes accessible for kids, teens, and adults.

(On a personal note: where I live, we have one internet provider at one speed. My husband will begin teaching his K-8 music classes online next week. Unfortunately my internet capabilities may be a huge factor in how I can proceed; if the showcase uploads are any indication - a three minute video upload can take me 3-8 hours via Google Photos.
I will create a Plan B or C, etc if the Live stream & full video uploads are not an option.)

Additionally, if you have an apparatus at home and would like to schedule an online private, I would love to find a way to work with you !

Thoughts on Income

I started this sentence with "as a small business owner" but truly, we are all impacted: this severely uncertain time has abruptly interfered with many peoples' incomes. I have received questions about ways to donate to the studio. Yes, donations help us cover business expenses when we cannot generate income; however, my fear is we have no idea how long our 'normal, daily lives' will be disrupted. If you are secure and looking to donate, I encourage supporting your local businesses and local artists.
But more importantly, donate to food banks and charities!

There are relief bills and assistance being approved in the state, and I am hopeful that will provide some financial aid for us all.

As for helping the studio and students, I do offer scholarships for flyers in need, as I want these classes to be accessible. Recently, some students have contributed by *donating classes* from their packages or purchases online. If you are wanting to contribute in this way, classes or packages can be purchased online or via Venmo to Kristen Krup or PayPal to klynnkrup@gmail.com.

Stay tuned for another update re: Online Classes/Exercises -
Be Well!!

Our COVID-19 Updates

Safety in the studio is our number one priority.
At this time, we are still holding regularly scheduled classes, but as CDC & WHO recommendations regarding COVID-19 evolve and update, classes may be subject to cancellation.

We want to be an outlet for you during this time but also exercise care and caution for the greater good of our community. If classes are cancelled, we will share online resources via our Instagram to keep ya'll moving and in *aerial shape* at home.

Kristen is out of the studio 3/15-3/18, as previously planned, so there are no Silks classes this Sunday through Tuesday.
Jessica will still hold her regular Lyra classes.
And Beth will guest teach an Aerial Bootcamp Wednesday at 5pm & Silks Level II Wednesday at 6pm.

With the social distancing recommendations & operating out of a shared space, we will continue to keep our class sizes small and fastidiously clean & disinfect frequently touched surfaces per CDC recommendations.

What we ask of our students:

+ Please DO NOT come to class if you're not feeling well or have been in contact with someone who is sick. If you are exhibiting signs of illness, you will not be allowed to participate or enter the studio.

+ Wash your hands in the studio prior to class and after, minimum of 20 seconds.
Students are REQUIRED to thoroughly wash hands before and after lessons!

+ Avoid touching your face; cover coughs and sneezes; and then, wash your hands again.

+ BYO yoga mat, props, and full water bottle(s)!
We will not use shared props at this time during warm up or cool down, so if there is a peanut, resistance band, or foam roller you need, please bring it with you.
While we do our best to keep the floor clean, we operate out of a shared space. Bringing a yoga mat (please clean prior to activity) will ensure the surface you interact with during warm up and cool down is in your control.
We do have a water cooler, but please bring your own full water bottle (or two) to limit touching your water bottle to the water cooler or interacting with another shared surface.

+ BYO rosin. If you have rosin, please bring it; otherwise, we may limit usage of shared rosin. The homemade rosin is 90% alcohol based but a shared container.
If you have a small spray bottle at home, we can help you make a personal batch.

+ Pick an apparatus & stay there. Please do not share apparatuses during class, you get an 'assigned' silk or lyra during class.

+ Unfortunately, Kids classes will be canceled through 3/29. Because the majority of the children students require hands-on spotting, it is in the best interest of the studio to halt theses classes in the interim. Kristen will be available for private lessons.

This is a lot of information & we are constantly being bombarded with updates of do's & don'ts. We want to make the best decision possible with the information we have. While we acknowledge it's frustrating to be home and practice social distancing, being sick or infecting others is much worse. We appreciate our student base and are putting the onus on our students to make the best decisions for themselves.
Be well & Take care! We look forward to flying with you more in the future!!

We love to share! But not your cooties ...

While we may be rounding the corner of Winter’s cold & flu season, it’s still important to stay vigilant in our health and hygiene practices!
As the number of Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases increases in the United States, using and sharing correct information is so important to mitigating any potential impacts in our community.
A couple (rote) steps we’d like to share that can build & support our community preparedness:

  1. Stay home if you’re not feeling well!
We understand you don’t want to miss class, but we also don’t want to miss class because you shared your germs. If you’re not feeling well, it could be for any number of reasons. But first and foremost, please take care of yourself before any physical activity.
If you have a package with us, we understand - you will not lose a class. Please communicate with your instructor if you are feeling sick.

  2. Cover coughs and sneezes. Immediately wash your hands after

  3. Wash hands with soap and water a minimum of 20 seconds (equivalent to singing yourself the Happy Birthday song 3 times) after using the bathroom; prior to eating; after coughing or sneezing

  4. Stay hydrated and well-rested. Whatever you do in your routine to help yourself stay healthy, keep at it :)

At this time, there are no vaccines or drug treatments for COVID-19. The means of transmission is still unclear. Currently, symptoms are described as “fever; cough; or shortness of breath.”

There are so many news sources available, so be sure to check your facts before sharing information that may be untrue. It is not a time to panic but rather stay informed and, again, vigilant.

We look forward to flying with you !
